Babywearing Basics
Working as a postpartum doula, I have fallen in love with babywearing. Using this ancient component of attachment parenting to help families bond with and care for their children in one of the most intimate ways has become a passion of mine. Doing research on further education and support for my clients, I discovered a lack in our community. There are several support groups, but not many educational classes. I then decided to expand my teaching outside of the home.
I offer two types of classes, public and private. These classes are designed for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, babysitters, nannies, teachers, daycare workers, doulas, anyone and everyone ages 11 and up who want to learn more about how to safely wear a child and what carrier(s) are best for your needs. It will cover:
Origins of Babywearing
Benefits of Babywearing
Spoiling - Possible or Impossible
Who Can and Should Carry
Child Anatomy
Syles of Carriers
Fabrics and Blends
Brands and Where to Buy
Positions for Different Ages and Carriers
Breastfeeding in Different Carriers
Carrying Multiple Children
Weaning Out of Being Worn
This class will also include handouts for you to take home and refer back to, hands on experience with sample carriers and weighted dolls, and individual fitting assistance for those who bring their own carrier.
Children's Policy
This is a child friendly course!
Children aged 11 to 15 must purchase a child's ticket. As this class is designed for siblings and babysitters as well as parents and grandparents, the younger students will be encouraged to participate in the class work and hands on work. These children must be accompanied by a ticket holding adult over the age of 18. If your child over the age of 11 does not wish to participate, please do not bring them to the course.
Children age 10 and younger are welcome to attend at no charge. Please keep in mind that this is a class, however, and disruptive children may be asked to leave if impeding others' learning. Children who weigh less than 40 pounds may be used by you in place of dolls during the hands on portion of the class.
Adult tickets are for students aged 16 and older. Adults aged 16 and 17 are allowed to attend the course unattended, however, they are not allowed to accompany children on their own. Adults accompanying children MUST be at least 18 years old.
Public Classes
Public classes will take place at library's across Johnson County. If you would like to have a public class held at a location closer to you, contact Madison to find a more convenient location for you.
Classes will consist of a maximum of 10 students. Individual time will be allowed during the hands-on portion of the class. If you feel you need more individual help after the class, you may schedule a private class at half the cost.
Private Classes
Private classes will take place in an individual's home. These classes include more casual conversation and more time for individual help.
Classes will consist of a maximum of 4 students. It is asked that you have a television (or something similar) that would allow me to project the presentation.
